dates in Excel 2003

Does anyone know why this is happening - my dates are appearing as numbers ie 9/12/05 is displayed as 38695. This cell is formatted as dd/mm/yy and when I click on it I can see in the formula bar that it is 9/12/05 but its displays as 38695. This is happening to all my dates on this sheet. It doesn't happen in new workbooks.

Could you have some conditional formatting causing a problem? try clearing all formats and then reapplying the date format.
