End of Previous Year Question

Is there a formula that regardless of any date given can go back and look for the end of the
previous year. Ex. date shown 3/16/09 need to find or calculate 12/31/08

Try: =DATE(YEAR(A1)-1,12,31)

Where A1 holds 3/16/09.
