"File is locked for editing" and I don't know why!

Hello,
I have a macro-based tool that I posted on my company's file library. The tool's settings are set such that they can only be viewed if the user doesn't select "save as" from the website, but only "open". (This forces them to get it from the website each time so that they have the newest version always).

Some of the users have been telling me that they get an error message that the file is locked for editing by them and therefore they cannot work with the tool. I open it the same way and do not get that message. Does anyone know what setting or issue could be causing this?

You can teach Excel a new custom list. Type the list in cells, File, Options, Advanced, Edit Custom Lists, Import, OK
I ran accross a suggestion online that I save the file as a .xls instead of a .xlsm and that actually doesn't have a problem. The only issue is that .xls files are much bigger and have other compatibility problems...

i ran into this problem also, i solved it by changing the file atributes to "read only".

I'm confused? Why shouldn't this have the opposite effect of what you are trying to do? I would like the user to be able to access the file and be able to manipulate it? I'll give it a try though.

I assume you adjust the file attributes in Windows explorer?

In my case the macros run to create new files. There are no changes to the macro file that need to be saved. Being read only allowed multiple users to open the file at the same time.

Thanks, I tried this. Unfortunately when I upload the file to the company's portal, it clears the "read only" status. :???:
