I have a column with numbers from the low 100's to several million. When placing this data on a chart, it will be much easier to read if the numbers are 316K or 2.1M instead of 316,457 or 2,098,220. I know I can use 0, "K" to change the 316,457 to 316K and I've tried 0,"M" on the 2098 but it reads as 2098M as opposed to 2.1M.

I need a formula I can put in each cell that would convert to either the K or M rounded up/down number to display.

Thanks in advance

Excel Facts

Which came first: VisiCalc or Lotus 1-2-3?
Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston debuted VisiCalc in 1979 as a Visible Calculator. Lotus 1-2-3 debuted in the early 1980's, from Mitch Kapor.
You can use a cell custom format & use
Excel Formula:
[<1000]0.0;[<1000000]0.0, "K";0.0,,"M"
