In Cell E4 I have the following:
$3,510 - $1,080 - $540

I need a formula in cell AM4 which will get the answer of the first amount - i.e. $3,510

This amount may differ in value so could be $900 or $50

Thanks in advance

You can teach Excel a new custom list. Type the list in cells, File, Options, Advanced, Edit Custom Lists, Import, OK
Does this work for you?
Excel Formula:
=LEFT(E4,FIND(" ",E4))+0
