Hidden Merge?

Hey All,

Weird on this…

I have a cell in Excel 365 that is merged. The cell is then looked up by a formula in another worksheet to do a count if.

The cell in question is actually made up of five rows which have individual items starting from column B, but rhe cell in Ax is actually made up of a1,a2,a3 etc. to a6.

so cell a appears as a merged cell on the face of it, When you highlight the sale the ribbon greys the merged cell icon. However if you click the icon it shows the detail on EACH row that was in the merged cell? If you then click to merge again it removes the data from the other cells in the row? After asking if you want to merge the cell.

Can’t work out how this cell is formatted to work with formula in the other worksheet, only when it shows it’s merged. It’s a bit like the cell has been split across the but each line still has the cell name in it?

e.g

cell name = smith ( looks merged across) a1a2a3…..when you unmerge its shows smith in each Ax cell? But there seems to be no way to put it back to the original state?

You can do that if you copy a merged cell, then select say 5 cells with values in and paste formatting. The cells then merge but keep their underlying values. IMO, it really shouldn't work this way, but there you go.
