how do i hide only the column header, leaving the row header to be visible?

I don't know if this will help with what you need. Tools>Options>Window Options>Uncheck Row & Column Headers. Then you can create your own row headers - In Cell a2 type =a1+1 and copy down to the end of your spreadsheet. This may not be what you want, but I can't think of any other way (not saying it can't be done).
