THANK you very much. I am not being able to make it work, I am not surprised as I am a complete begginner. Maybe I am doing something wrong. Will it work if "apple" is nor the only word contained in cell, but only part of the text inside the cell?

Maybe what I need can be done a different way: I have now applied conditional formatting to the entire table, so that all cells that contain the word "appple" are now highlighted. As mentioned before, highlighted cells (cells that contain the word "apple") are not all in the same column but in many different columns.

I need excel to sort the table so that rows that contain a highlighted cell (which could be in ANY column) appear at the top of the table. At the moment I am achieving this by creating as many ordering levels as there are columns in the table, which takes a long time to do. I need to find an easier way o doing it. I am sure there mut be a very simple way to do it ¡HELP!

No, it wont.

Change the formula to:

=COUNTIF($A1:$F1,"*apple*")

Tell me if this worked.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH. I am not being able to make it work. However I have found another way of achieving what I need using the formula =ISNUMBER(LOOKUP(9999,SEARCH("apple",A1:AN1)))
which let's me identify rows in which the word "apple" is present in any column.
I got this idea from another thread I started named Sort by rows containig certain text in ANY column http://www.mrexcel.com/forum/showthread.php?p=2859774#post2859774
