How do I turn a date into text?

In cells D1, E1, and F1 I have the following dates: Jan-12, Feb-12, and Mar-12.


In cells J2, K2, and L2 I have the following formulas:


J2 ="Sales $ "&D1
K2 ="Sales $ "&E1
L2 ="Sales $ "&F1


The problem is that the result I'm getting in J2 is NOT "Sales $ Jan-12" but rather "Sales $ 40909."


The 40909 is Excel's number for 1/1/2012. I tried changing the format of cell J2 to be Date MMM-YY, but that did not solve my problem. Any suggestions?

J2 ="Sales $ "&TEXT(D1,"mmm-yy")
K2 ="Sales $ "&TEXT(E1,"mmm-yy")
L2 ="Sales $ "&TEXT(F1,"mmm-yy")

Try Text formula for date and specify the date format as "MMM-YY"
