Hi,
I'm working on a huge excel file which contains lot of information/data/micros/formulas/graph/etc

file is in use 24x7 in rotating shift and different users are using the same file and keep updating time to time.

most of the cells contains some important information in shape of comments.

i want to protect these comments so no one can accidently delete or modify any comments. and let everyone see comments as these are important and helpfull for everyone.

please help me to protect comments but same time let anyone read these. only concern is to protect that no one can delete or modify.

thanks.

Excel Facts

Which Excel functions can ignore hidden rows?
The SUBTOTAL and AGGREGATE functions ignore hidden rows. AGGREGATE can also exclude error cells and more.
Turning on worksheet protection will prevent editing or input of comments in protected cells.

Remember that by default, ALL cells are protected, so you may want to unlock cells which you want people to be able to change.

thnx Gerald, can i do it using some password so only me or authorized person can change comments whenever its needed.
i'm not good in excel. all i'm doing it using help or by posting in forums.
would like to request you if you can give me proper step-by-step hints. i only want to protect comments and all those cells are not required any editing by anyone else.

its like:
in cell A1
name of the machine

in A1 there are comments which includes all the info regarding "name of the machine" and me or management don't want anyone to change this info (comments). and ofcourse name of the machine is not going to change in A1

i'm using excel 2007 (office 2007)

thnx again

When you go into the Protect Sheet, you can specify from a whole list of what you would want the user to do and not do, then add a password. However, every time you wanted to edit or add a comment, you may have to unprotect the sheet.

What version are you using? When I try it in 2003, it locks the comment and I can not edit or delete the comment. Make sure you are protecting the sheet and not the workbook, if you protect just the workbook, the comments will still be editable.
