how to reference the cell before this one

i am using this form to find a given value in an array.(my actual formula differs a little but this shows what i am accomplishing in my formula.)


=index(b2:d4,match("string1",a2:a4,0),match("string2"b1:b4,1))


how can i then get the cell to the left of the one that is returned by this formula?


my first instinct was to use offset but that only works when you reference a cell not a value.

You'll also want a comma between "string2" and the range.
