Identical Headings-formatting as table/chart adds digit

Hi Excel Experts! This may be a dumb question answered elsewhere, but I don't think I'm asking the right questions w/correct terminology. Help!?

I have several Excel-based reports that have to be formatted as tables and charts. Before using FORMAT AS TABLE command, the data looks like this: pls note duplicate headings:

See how it's added a digit to my original entries? I've tried unticking 'my table has headers' but that led to a whole new issue, adding a nonexistant series; using ' before entries, changing to Text; etc--no dice. My goal is to have a lovely table and chart on each spreadsheet that I can share w/clients. We've recently upgraded from to 2007 from 2003 and many of our reports have identical headings like this, so any advice is beyond appreciated!!!

This is because tables need to have unique column names. Since you have duplicates it will auto add that number. Even attempting to manually change the header row of a table will cause issues.

The only thing you could do is have the data formatted as text and rename them to things like "Year 2008", "Year 2008 " and "Year 2008 " bya dding spaces afterward.

Bummer! I have 5 years' worth of 2003 reports to bring into Excel 2007 and reformat b/c this is how many of our tracking reports were formatted in 2003. Is it possible to automate this? I'm a Word/PPT person, so please forgive my ignorance...I do appreciate your taking the time to answer. BTW, love your avatar image

Well, the big question is how you plan on using the data and why it's required to be in table format.

When I see how your data is formatted, the first thing my brain says to do is to choose paste specail, and then use transpose so you're left with data formatted in column A, B and C with the following format:

2007 Wave 1 25%
2007 Wave 2 50%
2007 Wave 3 12%

You can give each column a heading, and then use a pivot table to easily summarize the data. A lot is going to depend on why it has to actually be in a table object rather than just in the worksheet.

Hmmmm...We generate PPT reports or simply pretty up the data and share workbooks with clients; and these are tracking reports carried on for more than 5 years, so the clients get used to seeing data a particular way; change is a hard sell. Also trying to minimize formatting necessary once brought into PPT. Thanks for your thoughts!
