identifying which range to use according to maximum value

Hi,

Advanced apologies if this kind of question has been raised before, but I didn't come across such a topic, after a good hour looking for a solution in google.

I'll try to explain my question with an example;

I have two versions of an online course assessment (let's just call them "access from work" and "access from home"), which I have made available for a list of trainees. So a person can take either the "access from work" version, or the other, or even both - depending on their perference.

From an administrator point of view I've got an excel workbook to record these assessment results. I've got one worksheet (range) to record any results coming from the "access from work" version, which looks like the following;

What I would like to do is create a third worksheet to merge these two ranges together. When I say "merge" - what I mean is...

1) First, check whether a user has a value on the "score" column in any of the above two ranges

2) If a user doesn't have a score in any of the ranges, show a "-" sign.

3) If a user has a score in only one of the ranges - show that score and also show which range it is from.

4) If a user has a score in both ranges, check which score is the highest and show it, and again show which range the score came from.

So far I've been able achieve the options 1), 2) and 3) by using if() formulas. But I'm stuck on how to get option 4) to work.

If you take the user name "Nicky"'s example - she's done the assessment in both versions. However she's got a better score value in the "access from work" version. So the merged sheet needs to show which is the greatest value (which I know that it can be done with a Max() formula, but I also need to show which range this maximum value is coming from (i.e. "access from work") and that is where I haven't got a clue how to do.

Basically this merged worksheet (when one of you lovely people shows me how to do it) should look like the following

Excel Facts

Format cells as time
Select range and press Ctrl+Shift+2 to format cells as time. (Shift 2 is the @ sign).
Try using an if statement and vlookup

=If(vlookup(name,Access from work range data,col offset,0)>vlookup(name,Access from Home range data,col offset,0)),vlookup(name,Access from work range data,col offset,0),vlookup(name,Access from Home range data,col offset,0))

This will give you the opporunit to get both the score and the source if you change the column offset accordingly.

Genius!!! problem solved...It worked like a charm! Thank you for opening my eyes BGY23 ;)

Ofcourse I ended up with a very long fomula (to get all the other checks in) but it is working exactly as I wanted. Thanks again!
