If / Then statement returning a Format - is it possible?

Is it possible to build an if statement that would return something like this;

If(A1=A2, "cell background is grey", if(A1>A2, "cell background red", "cell background is green").

of course the items in quote are where i need the help, is something like this possible. I know you can set-up formatting for colors based upon bracketed / non bracketed, but that would not apply to this scenario as there are no brackets.

any help would be great.

Try conditional formatting. Menu > Format > Conditional Formatting
