Insert numbers when column A is blank

What I am looking to do is get a formula that automatically places numbers in Column A if the cell is blank. Once column A has something in it the numbering stops and when it is blank again start the numbering process starts again from 1.

Bring active cell back into view
Start at A1 and select to A9999 while writing a formula, you can't see A1 anymore. Press Ctrl+Backspace to bring active cell into view.
