Linking to PPT, File too Large

Using PPT 2010 to link to a large (88 MB) Excel 2010 file.

The PPT deck is relatively short, 28 slides, but is 175MB in size. The type of linked data includes roughly 50 charts and 25 instances of text blocks.

I am looking for a solution to drastically reduce the size of this PPT deck. I'm not sure if the issue is how I am copying/pasting from Excel (select and copy the data from within Excel, go to PPT and select Paste Special < Paste Link).

One idea is to save the source file as something new each month and break each link and replacing it with a picture of the chart or text instead of a link. Is there a quick option to break/replace the link with PPT?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
