ColA & ColB each contain numbers. This formula (in C1:C100) identifies the numbers in ColB that are also in ColA (Match). ColA must be in ascending sequence.

=IF(B1<>"",IF(VLOOKUP(B1,$A$1:$A$100,1)=B1,"Match","NoMatch"),"blank")

How do I make a similar comparison of alphabetic data (John Smith, Jane Doe, etc)?

Excel Facts

Which came first: VisiCalc or Lotus 1-2-3?
Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston debuted VisiCalc in 1979 as a Visible Calculator. Lotus 1-2-3 debuted in the early 1980's, from Mitch Kapor.
Hi
Welcome to the board

Try:

=IF(B1<>"",IF(ISNUMBER(MATCH(B1,$A$1:$A$100,0)),"Match","NoMatch"),"blank")

This works for both numbers and text, and does not require that the items are in ascending order.

If A1:A100 is in ascending order, the above formula would still work... Othwerwise see pgc's reply.

Thanks for the prompt replies.

Part of my problem was that I had erroneously converted the names in ColA Last, First to (space)First Last. I used TRIM to remove the leading space; then pgc01's formula. It works like a champ!
