Math Help. Average percentage.

I've been doing some formulas for finding average percentage. However when checking the calculations I'm getting different results based on calculation method.
Here is an extremely simplified example.

Can anyone explain the math to me? why would i have a different percent based on these two methods of calculation? Should produce the same result, no?
does it have something to do with using negative values? (I don't believe this should have any effect)

The maths behind this is basically that you are measuring two different things, and you should not expect the numbers to be the same.

Let's simplify.

Let's say you only had 2 numbers in Col A, 10, and 1000.
Let's say you only had 2 numbers in Col B, both 1.

See what the results are then with you formulas, which might explain why they are different.

Maybe an exaggerated example will enlighten you (you can't really take the average of averages):
1000000 50 .005%
3 3 100%
average of avgs 50.0025%

totals:
1000003 53 .0053%

Make it easier to understand?

I do see the logic in why they are different.
exagerating the differences does help show why.

For my example then I'd say safe to assume the proper avg percentage, would be as in the first example. ( sum of the 3, divided by 3... as any average calculation)

my example is an exagerated values (to achieve possible negative values) for sales by salesperson report.
Column A - Revenue (amnt charged)
Column B - Income after expenses/overhead (again exagerated for negatives)
Column C - Income % of revenue.

Was looking for the average % of income based on the revenue (amnt charged) for the salesperson.
For my example of a 'terrible salesperson', the individual averages -3.35% income on the total sales.

Sounds correct to me, I just questioned my method, when the other calculation was providing different result.

For what it's worth, in my opinion (and I think it's just my opinion) the -3.35% number in your original post does not really mean anything useful.

The useful numbers are the individual % variances (0.35%, -7.6% and so on) AND the total number of -3.64%.

So, for example, if you're talking about an individual, you would refer to the 0.35% (or whatever). If you're talking about the group, the -3.64% number is relevant, and not the -3.35% number, which does not really mean much.

I've also come to this exact conclusion since yesterday & playing with the results. Averaging the percentages themselves has no real use. (the odd ball averages -300% or 275% , will have far too much affect. However if adding the totals then finding the percentage, this is a far more accurate way of averaging the 'sales' etc. Those odd ball projects w/ very high revenue, or the bad loss, utimately washes into the totals and would more properly reference the %'s I think would be useful.
Took a day to wrap my mind around what I was actually trying to achieve, averaging %'s made sense at the time, but thinking more about the process has convinced me otherwise.
