Merged cell selection is greyed out

I received a spreadsheet and the "merge cells" is greyed out via:

select several adjacent cells, select Format / Cells / Allignment
Merge Cells is not selectable.

There are NO hidden colums or rows, there is no password needed.

Please advice

Could the worksheet/cells be protected? I believe the newer versions of excel let you protect different features independently

One of the cells in the range you are selecting has already been merged. Select each cell seperatley to find the merged cell, then unselect merged and then remeregw the new range.
