merging files by common ID variable

I have a number of files, all of which have a common ID variable. I'd like to combine the files (adding variables to existing
records or cases). Any way to do this in Excel? I've done many searches, but maybe I'm not using the correct terminology. In SPSS lingo, it is a FILE MERGE, ADD VARIABLES. What say the Excel pros?

I, also, would dearly like to know how to do precisely that using Excel instead of SPSS. Surely it must be possible? I hope someone has the answer.
