Hi, I am writting departmental procedures and in my document I am clicking on the footer, Insert Auto Text: last saved by. But it does not seem to be working. I want it to update with a new name each time someone goes into the document and makes a change and saves it. Can you help please? thanks Chris:confused:

Excel Facts

Which lookup functions find a value equal or greater than the lookup value?
MATCH uses -1 to find larger value (lookup table must be sorted ZA). XLOOKUP uses 1 to find values greater and does not need to be sorted.
Did you save the document before putting the Auto Text in the footer? I just played a bit, and this seemed to be a thing. Also, if I changed my user name in Tools - Options and then saved, then the field wouldn't update in normal view, but would in print preview. Not sure why! Hopefully someone that actually uses Word can shed some light ;)

From the help file, update before print. Looks like a hangover from slow machines and version minus 4 or something. If you had a lot of fields (like five or six), it used to slow the prog down immensely each time an update was required. So MS decided to allow you the option to turn off auto updates. However, if you printed, you would obviously want the updated info to print, so Word would update the fields. You might not even see the update in print preview, but on paper this would be fine.

On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Print tab.
Under Printing options, do one of the following:
To update fields, select the Update fields check box.
To update linked information, select the Update links check box.

One option is also to update fields manually. Can't remember where this is on the menu, but for sure if you right click on any field, the option to update is there.

Hope this helps.
