Hi,

I am looking at a workbook that has set up a named range called "_sex1". In Name Manager the range "Refers To" into an external file. The scope of "_sex1" is "MM Signoff".

In the workbook the cell C6 = _sex1. There is no formula in cell C6 it is either Male of Female.

Why does the named range refer to an external file? What is the meaning of the scope? There is no worksheet in the workbook called [MM Signoff].

Thanks
Jeff

Excel Facts

What is the fastest way to copy a formula?
If A2:A50000 contain data. Enter a formula in B2. Select B2. Double-click the Fill Handle and Excel will shoot the formula down to B50000.
How should we know why? ;)

There must be a sheet by that name - perhaps it is hidden.
You guys know everything!

Also, you are correct there is a tab called [MM Signoff]. But why is the name refering to an external location? It is populated by the user. They just select "Male/Female" from a data validation thing.

I'm trying to determine if this is a mistake.

Which sheet's C6 are you talking about?

How could we know why it's set up the way it is, if we didn't create it?

They are not the same named range, which is why I asked the question I did.

OK - cell C6 is in the worksheet = "Inputs". Cell C6 is set to the named range "_sex1".
There are also multiple names. So for example there is a name "dateOfIssue" that is in the Name Manager twice. In one line it refers to cell "Inputs!C2", and in another it refers to an external file.

I'm guessing this is a mistake too.
