I have a Door Hardware list to identify, sort and quantify and am looking for a faster way to get this done.
There are 18 unique sets of hardware, identified by a number corresponding to their component parts.
For example, each set is described in the following format: 1.3.4.8.22
Whereas, 1=hinge type, 3=lock type, 4=frame type, 8=door stop type, 22=manufacturer
There are 250 doors and each doors has been assigned a string of numbers.

Is there a method you can recommend to take the list of 250 doors and assign each a Hardware Set Number to represent the string of numbers.
Then determine the total number of individual hardware components needed?

Thank you for your help

HI,

Welcome to MrExcel forum!

I have noticed strange things in your spreadsheet.

Why is the description of hardware set 3 much longer than 5 numbers?
What does `?' in the description of hardware set 5 mean?

There are up to (33) unique hardware components that may be attributed to each door.
The greatest number of hardware pieces per door is (11)

The (?) means the architect hasn't decided if that particular piece will work and therefor it is an option and must be counted separately from a standard (8)
If a non-number character would make a formula or sorting function faulty, the (?) can be substituted.

Thanks

What is "Hardware Set Number" you wish to be computed? Please give a few examples.

You want "the total number of individual hardware components" to be computed. Do you want it to be computed for each door type separately?
