In excel I type a number such as 01234, and excel knocks of the first zero. How do I make it retain the number ?

How to create a cell-sized chart?
Tiny charts, called Sparklines, were added to Excel 2010. Look for Sparklines on the Insert tab.
Format the cells as Text.

You can still perform operations on the contents although using this method you need to use a general format cell for formulas.

The other way is a custom format but that seems to lock it to x digits and adds that amount of 0's

Frustrating isn't it?

Maybe you need to go on a course on speed typing.
Or write short posts. :)
