Opening up XLS Files

Program: MS Excel 2003
Problem: When double clicking on an excel spreadsheet on the desktop ms excel opens up but thats it, it doesn't go into actually opening up the file

If I load up excel first then go file -> open, all is good

Can anyone suggest what I need to do to fix it, i'm hoping that I don't need to re-install Microsoft Excel

Welcome to the board.

In Excel, go to tools --> options --> general, and uncheck "Ignore other applications"
