Pasting into merged cells in Excel 2010

I'm using Excel 2010 and have a sheet with merged cells (needed as I need to have different cell widths for different groups of rows). If I paste into a single merged cell, all works fine, but if I paste into 2 or more merged cells the paste ignores the merge and pastes into each of the original unmerged cells. Is there a way around this?
 

Excel Facts

Format cells as time
Select range and press Ctrl+Shift+2 to format cells as time. (Shift 2 is the @ sign).
