Hello everybody,

I’m using Excel 2016 for Mac - Standalone - Version 16.16.21.

I’m trying to launch PERSONAL.XLSB for editing purposes and get a message

“Cannot edit a macro on a hidden workbook. Unhide the workbook using the Unhide command.”

But the Unhide button is not available on my View menu.

Trying to launch the file directly where it is stored is also not possible.

However, I can reach the PERSONAL.XLSB via the Excel file from where I created it, but I find that a little annoying to use that file each time I need it.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide to me.

Hello md25,

The PERSONAL.XLSB file is a BINARY HIDDEN EXCEL FILE.
It normally resides in the following directory ...

C:\Users\UserNameResidesHere\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLStart

To view the file within EXCEL itself, here is where you will find it ...
1) Click on VIEW tab below
2) Select UNHIDE, and the binary-PERSONAL.XLSB file will appear. It is often referrred to as a 'phantom' file because it is always HIDDEN from view within EXCEL

Cheers

Desmond

Hello Desmond,
Thank you for your reply. I have meanwhile got access to the file via the button "Visuel Basic" on the Developer tab. By the way my View menu do not include the Unhide button (see image).

First make sure that Excel is maximised, if it is and you can't see Hide or Unhide still then...
.
Go File - Options - Customize Ribbon then on the right hand side under Main tabs find View (expand it if it isn't already by clicking the plus box) , click the plus by Window to expand if it isn't already.

Check if Hide and Unhide are there. If they are not go to the left hand side, change the Choose commands from box to All commands, scroll down to Hide, click it then click the Add button in the middle... repeat for Unhide.

Click OK
