Pivot table returning spurious character

I have a pivot table showing a count of items in a library. However, one of the library names (Well Drilling Operations) is shown as a single quote mark ` . If I change the library name in the source table the pivot table shows the correct result, but when I change the source back to the correct value the strange mark re-appears! I have reduced the number of characters in the original name (.. Operation) and increased it (..Operationss). Both are fine in the pivot - it is only the correct name that gets translated. Has anyone else seen this weird behaviour.

Excel Facts

Copy formula down without changing references
If you have =SUM(F2:F49) in F50; type Alt+' in F51 to copy =SUM(F2:F49) to F51, leaving the formula in edit mode. Change SUM to COUNT.
If the name was overtyped originally, that will be stored with the pivot field and you'll see the behaviour you describe. You should be able to overtype the spurious character with the original name in the pivot and it will persist after that.
