PivotTable Data Source Greyed Out

I work with several pivot tables that are distributed based on an external data source. Some of them are coplex and as we know, reproducing pivot details and calculated fields is tedious (Microsoft, fix this!)

However, if I want to redistribute a subset of the data with an idential pivot table in a much more managable size, I normally double click on a filed which createsa new table on a new sheet, and then I will change the pivot table data source to "Table1" .

This works on the majority, but on some workboosk, I am unable to select a table or range as the option is greyed out. The only choice I have is to choose an alternative external source.

Anything obvious I'm missing? Using Excel 2007 and this happens on both xlsx format documents as well as legacy .xls formats.
