Problem applying conditional formatting in Excel 2013 desktop

I am using Excel 2013 desktop and trying to insert traffic light colours in certain cells. I did the following:

1. Click Home on the ribbon,
2. then Conditional Formatting,
3. highlight cell rules,
4. then equal to
5. in the pop up box type the letter R (or A or G)
6. click the drop down menu on the right & custom format

Excel 2013 does not apply the format/fill colours in the cells?

FYI, I previously used the same method in web version of Excel 2016 and the format was applied. Is there a different method using desktop 2013?

What are the values in the cells you are trying to format & what range of cells did you select before applying the rule?

I can't find my snips, on an unfamiliar laptop, to demonstrate in a format that is allowable to post on here.

No matter, thanks for your patience, I mimicked what you did and it does not work either. I must be doing something silly. I did note though that when I double click a cell, be it one that contains r, a or g, I can see the correct colour briefly appear in a thin strip on the left hand side of the cell, not in the whole of the cell. When I stop double clicking it disappears. It is as if the conditional format works, in identifying the colour to appear in the cell but does not do it properly as described above. Hope that makes sense?

If you select all the cells & set the fill colour to No Fill, that may work.

I tried unsuccessfully though it seemed counter intuitive, if I understood correctly, as it just appears blank as a result, and when I double click the cell then no thin strip of relevant colour appears to the left?

You need to leave the conditional formatting in place & then manually set the fill of cells to No fill. That may then allow the conditional formatting to work.
This is something I've only come across twice, once it worked & once it didn't.

Thanks. If you mean right click for format then select 'no colour' for fill I just tried that but it didn't work!?
