I am using Excel XP and trying to protect an entire workbook. Only a few elements in the workbook is protected. This file must be sent to a lot of people and I don't want them to make any changes and prefer not to use Read-Only. Please - any suggestions?

How can you automate Excel?
Press Alt+F11 from Windows Excel to open the Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) editor.
What you want to do is Lock the cells you want protected under Format, Cells, Protection. Then, password protect the workbook (under Tools, Protection).
