I am trying to use Harlan Grove's pull function but I can't get it working despite spending a good deal of time doing the research and playing with various options. That leaves me in 1 of 2 places, 1) I'm not using the latest code, or 2) there is something so obvious that my brain has stopped seeing it.

I'm using Excel 2007 and this is the command that I'm trying to execute and getting a #REF error.

=VLOOKUP(K2,pull(Reference!H6),4,FALSE)
where Referece!H6 is ="='"&C2&"["&C5&"-"&C3&" inventory.xlsx]Inventory WK"&C6&"'!$K:$P"
C2 is C:\Dropbox\Inventory\2012\
C3 is 2012
C5 is 1
C6 = 5

I know that my string works because the following function works
=VLOOKUP(K2,'C:\Dropbox\Inventory\2012\[1-2012 inventory.xlsx]Inventory WK5'!$K:$P,4,FALSE)

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks
Sam

It might by useful if you post "Harlan Grove's pull function" or, at minimum, provide a link for what you are referring to.

This is the code that I have for the pull function

Function pull(xref As String) As Variant
'inspired by Bob Phillips and Laurent Longre
'but written by Harlan Grove
'-----------------------------------------------------------------
'Copyright (c) 2003 Harlan Grove.

'it under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published
'by the Free Software Foundation; either version 2 of the License,
'or (at your option) any later version.
'-----------------------------------------------------------------
'2004-05-30
'still more fixes, this time to address apparent differences between
'XL8/97 and later versions. Specifically, fixed the InStrRev call,
'which is fubar in later versions and was using my own hacked version
'under XL8/97 which was using the wrong argument syntax. Also either
'XL8/97 didn't choke on CStr(pull) called when pull referred to an
'array while later versions do, or I never tested the 2004-03-25 fix
'against multiple cell references.
'-----------------------------------------------------------------
'2004-05-28
'fixed the previous fix - replaced all instances of 'expr' with 'xref'
'also now checking for initial single quote in xref, and if found
'advancing past it to get the full pathname [dumb, really dumb!]
'-----------------------------------------------------------------
'2004-03-25
'revised to check if filename in xref exists - if it does, proceed;
'otherwise, return a #REF! error immediately - this avoids Excel
'displaying dialogs when the referenced file doesn't exist
'-----------------------------------------------------------------
