I would be very grateful for your help.

I have a distribution of an electricity load profile of an household over one day (15minute values). I would like to distort it a bit by generating new random values within a range. Is it correct to use RANDBETWEEN and for the range the original values minus/plus the standard deviation of the original distribution.

you can use Randbetween function
or

=TRUNC(RAND()*(High-Low)+Low)

some times Randbetween return with duplication value to avoid the duplication of values in the function you can use MRAND function

to use MRAND you need to down load morefunc addins

Depends - RAND and RANDBETWEEN just provide (Pseudo)random numbers between 0 and 1 or the numbers you set respectively. So your formulation will just generate a bunch of numbers randomly distributed in that range with no central tendancy if that is what you want.

If you want to simulate drawing from a normal distribution around your original number (which is what I would do if I were trying to make simulated load profiles) you need to use the following formula

NORMINV(Rand(),mean,SD)

Where mean is your original number and SD is the standard deviation of the new distribution around "Mean"

You may want to consider using different SD for different times of day or use a fixed proportion of the mean value for the SD
