Hi folks,

First time poster, long time reader. Problem:

I have two workbooks.

Workbook A has a lot of data. Name, Address, Price, Quantity, for sake of discussion.

I want Workbook B to grab data from Workbook A as such:

1. Typing in a person's name in a cell in Workbook B.
2. Using Excel to obtain the row number of that person from Workbook A.
3. Somehow defining a variable ROWNUMBER with the value from step 2 so that I can use the following formula: ='[Workbook_A.xls]SHEET1'!$A$ROWNUMBER

where $A is the column of a certain thing (Address, Price, etc) and $ROWNUMBER corresponds to which person it belongs to.

Any help would be greatly appreciated =)

Take a look at MATCH, which will return an item's relative position in a list. If you know where the list begins, you can adjust the outcome to get the row #.
Book1
ABCD
1NamesMatch
2Bob2
3Tom
4Fred
Sheet1

Or if you're trying to return all of the relevant information associated with the person whose name you're entering, you should take a look at VLOOKUP in the helpfile.

Hope that helps,
