Referencing other cells

I'm using Excel 2007 and for some reason, when I enter data (no equals sign) and I press an arrow key, excel thinks I'm trying to reference another cell instead of simply selecting a new one. This hasn't happened to me before. I tried using F8, but that only toggles between a singular reference and a range reference.
This is frustrating and slowing down my productivity a lot.
Please help.
Thank you.

Excel Facts

What is the fastest way to copy a formula?
If A2:A50000 contain data. Enter a formula in B2. Select B2. Double-click the Fill Handle and Excel will shoot the formula down to B50000.
What data are you using? "=" is not the only formula indicator. If you are entering a value beginning with "-", Excel will also assume it's a formula.

My data is strictly dates and text strings. I also found that Tab enters the data, and makes the spreadsheet "jump" a whole "screensshot" to the right while keeping the original cell selected. If I press tab a second time, it works properly. I've tried restarting numerous times. I am completely baffled.
