Simple Excel Problem

I would like to run a simple formula around a 12X1700 block of cells in my workbook, including those cells which are currently empty. I have basically been inserting this function into cell M1:
 =""""&A1&""""
This reproduces an entire block of cells immediately next to the first block, but with quotes around each cell in the second block. I have then been exporting this to Access, and eliminating the first block of cells there, before finally exporting to a Text file.

I know there has to be an easier way to do this.

I can turn the Calculation Option to Manual, so that after the second block of cells (with the quotes around them) is produced, I can delete the first block of cells. But then when I try to save as a text file, the second block tries to recalculate and I get an error message.

What shortcut(s) might I try?

Have you copied/pasted values over the second "block"?

I'm not sure I understand your meeting. Initially, once I created the function to create the second block, I did not edit the block at all. I simply saved it as an Excel spreadsheet, opened it in Access, deleted the first block there (Access did not recognize the function, only the results from the function, so I could eliminate the first block without the second block being effected), and then exported it to a text file.

Later, when I tried simply turning off the Automatic Calculation option, I created the second block, then deleted the first block and tried to save (in hopes of avoiding the whole Access step). But even with Automatic Calculation turned off, it tried to recalculate the functions when I saved...and because I had already deleted the first block, the functions all showed up as errors.

Right, Excel is behaving the way it's supposed to.

Before doing your save as, you can select the entire worksheet (CTRL+A), then Copy-->Clipboard-->Paste-->Paste Values (CTRL+C-->ALT+E+S+V). That will get rid of the formulas, so you can delete the first "block" without having to worry about it.

Excellent. Thank you so much. I was quite convinced Excel was behaving the way it's supposed to, and I knew I must have been missing something simple like this. Thank you telling me what it was.
