Small XLSM files very slow to open

Hi,

I have small excel 2007 xlsm files (they are timesheets) that are generally less than 350 kb. These have some general lookup values that use a floating combo box, but nothing too complicated, and definately small. These files take 5 to 10 minutes to open. But the original template opens immediately.

The template does have 26 sheets (2 per month, and lookup and instructions sheets). Previous versions of the timesheet (xls files) handled these without drama although this didn't have the lookups.

Can anyone give me some suggestions on how I could resolve this?

To head off some of the obvious responses:

1. the machine is running windows 7, and is less than 12 months old, i7, 6gb ram.
2. Tried saving it as an xls - didn't improve anything.
3. Can see the workbook on the screen, although it says not responding.

the problem is the amount of calculations and references you have. not the extension. Try and trim the fat.

Hi,

Thanks for getting back to me. Actually, there are very little calculations - just a simple caculation doing the difference between start time and end time for duration, and a total of these on each page. I investigated the vba that I had written - and removed all code (to see if that is my problem), but the time to open did not improve at all.

I had others try to open on their computer - takes 1 - 2 seconds to open their machine, still at least 5 minutes on mine. Don't know what the difference could be as the template was created on my machine.

Have you tried making a copy of the file and reopening it ?

Yes, but had no effect.

Getting somewhere with this, but still don't know why - when I open the files from home (outside of our work network) it takes a long time to open. When I open them when logged into the work VPN, files open very quickly. (Same computer.)
