strange notation

All of a sudden I encounter a rather strange notation problem.
A lot of cells have the format Financial and what I get is: $#.##57,- and I can't get rid of those #.## anymore!
I encountered this after a cleanup of the windows XP registry that went wrong. I even made a new clean install of Windows XP SP2 and of course Office 2003. But I still have those #.##!
What can be wrong here?
