I have followed the correct procedure I think to use the subtotal function:
4 columns: year, month, income1, income2; all rows filled; table with headers created.

The problem: if I click inside the table or even select the entire table, the subtotal function is dimmed. If I click anywhere outside the table, subtotal function is now a choice.

I need an expert excel user. What the heck is going on? Please ;-]/

Difference between two dates
Secret function! Use =DATEDIF(A2,B2,"Y")&" years"&=DATEDIF(A2,B2,"YM")&" months"&=DATEDIF(A2,B2,"MD")&" days"
Hmmm, interesting. And I agree with that person's question, "why is this so?" -- not making a table out of the data first... I am using Lynda.com, basic formulas and functions class, and the instructions and the demo indicate using a pre-formed table. In any event, I will try this solution and let you know if it works. Hi GlennUK. Exactly right. Subtotals don't work in a table. Of course you can just create formulas. Still wonder why not.

Anyway, my face is a bit red . . . I went back and watched the Lynda.com training video (yet again) and not only was the data in a list only, not a table, but in that video or the next one that piece of info was mentioned -- not stressed :-]/ -- that subtotals don't work in tables. Makes me wonder about my powers of observation . . .

Thank you for your input, Clare
