I have a budget spreadsheet and the top 40 rows are for DAILY entries. Under this section I have a MONTHLY TALLY which I want to be able to subtotal EACH category from the DAILY section to the MONTHLY section. (i.e. Dining 1/2/2012 $4.50; Dining 1/7/2012 $25.50 Gas for Car 1/10/2012 $40.00) I want to have the MONTHLY section show
Dining $30.00; Gas for Car $0.00. Is there a way to do this using just Excel or do I have to use VB?
Thanks,
Bob Loring

Excel Facts

Format cells as currency
Select range and press Ctrl+Shift+4 to format cells as currency. (Shift 4 is the $ sign).
You'll want to use =SUMIF

Is is safe to assume "Dining" or "Gas" would be in column A, the date in column B and the value in column C?

Kindly confirm and I'll provide an example of the syntax if you're still struggling.

Also... I think you meant 40.00 on the monthly version for gas with that example, right?

Welcome to the Board!

This is a great place for a Pivot Table.

Note that you're probably better off keeping your daily entries separate so that you can build transactional detail (like you'd see if you download your bank statement). If you have that, then you can slice and dice it any way that you want.
