Sumif with Alpha Text

I am attempting a SUMIF formula, but I think it is not working because the value we want returned is not numeric, but text (alpha).

=sumif(B:B,G1,A:A)

Basically, I want it to return the Alpha Text that is in Column A, if the value of G1, matches column B.

Only help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

=INDEX(A:A,MATCH(G1,B:B,0))
