Which Excel functions can ignore hidden rows?
The SUBTOTAL and AGGREGATE functions ignore hidden rows. AGGREGATE can also exclude error cells and more.
Unfortunately, your options are limited.

If you check the Properties for a tab control, under Format, you will see that there is no BackColor property. That leaves using a bitmap image, and the results every time I tried it are ugly.

You're best off leaving the default format for tabs, boring though that may be.
