A simple problem to describe...
=TEXT(A1,"$#,##0.00;[Red]-$,##0.00") where A1 is a negative number.

The negative value is not shown as red - always black.
The cell containing the formula can be formatted as general, number, text, currency - makes no difference.

Ideas ?
Excel 2003, btw

Can you sort left to right?
To sort left-to-right, use the Sort dialog box. Click Options. Choose "Sort left to right"
Functions only return values to their cells, they cannot apply formatting.

Can you just apply the custom number format directly to the cell?

Thanks for the help - it's what I suspected.

The function is part of a bigger formula that is giving subtotals to many columns at the bottom of a report - all in one long formula string.
So, I could try and split the formulas into individual cells and format the cell, but it's not worth the trouble !

Thanks anyway.
