I confess, I am not a very good user of this program. I need to create a basic spreadsheet with one cell to allow me to put in fix numbers that contain a mathmatical function. For example 7-3. This represents 7:00 - 3:00 for a schedule. But obviously when I type in 7-3 I am then performing a mathmatical calculation. How can I submit a numeric value such as 7-3 and not get a calculation value back.

Thank you kindly for your response.

if you actually want the text string 7-3 to appear exactly that way, then place an apostrophe in front of the string, like '7-3. Note: this is now a text string and you can't perform calculations with it so easily.

Thank you for your reply. I am wanting to use it as a text string without having to add the (') in front. The user who is asking for this is not very computer savvy. I need to make it as simple as possible. Any suggestions.

Thanks

If the cell you are typing 7-3 into is formatted as Text before you type in it then you will get 7-3.

What is the purpose of this?

Format the Cell as Text.
Then when 7-3 is entered it will be text.

from menu Forrmat-Cells choose number tab, select Text
