I would like to total numeric amounts based text in another column.

For example, I have a bunch of rows in "column F" with the same text (company name) and in "column I" i have numerics. Is there a way to total "column I" based on the same text of "column F"?

Excel Facts

Convert text numbers to real numbers
Select a column containing text numbers. Press Alt+D E F to quickly convert text to numbers. Faster than "Convert to Number"
If the purpose is to subtotal for each company name, then sort by company name and then use the SUBTOTAL function under the Data menu.

Or, if you have a unique list of customer names that you want to find the total for, then use the SUMIF function (ex. =SUMIF(A:A,C2,B:B))

A:A is where the customer name resides
B:B is where the amounts reside
C2 is the customer that you want to find the total

HTH!

ok so i tried subtotals first, but i cant really use that cause somehow its breaking up the rows in correctly and i'm thinking cause there is other info in other columns per company that is slightly different.

but =SUMIF(A:A,C2,B:B) works nicely

thanks for your help!
