vlookup returns row number

I am referencing tables of information, with VBA code calling vlookup, where I am pulling multiple individual cell information, adjusting the information and then need to store the adjusted information back into the cells of the vlookup table=worksheet. Is there a way to do this other than to add a column in the table that contains a monitonically increasing value that can be used in a range.offset reference?

The MATCH function will return a row index rather than the cell's value.
