vlookup with multiple rows?

I need to use VLOOKUP to bring back values from multiple cells into one cell.

Say I have the following:
A1: West
B1: $10,000
A2: East
B2: $20,000
A3: West
B3: $5,000

Then in cell E1 I have "West" and in cell E2 I have "East"

I want to put a VLOOKUP formula in cell F1 that will bring back the sum of cell B1 and cell B3.

Can anybody advise me?

In cell F1 try:

=SUMIF($A$1:$A$3,$E1,$B$1:$B$3)

=SUMIF($A$1:$A$3,$E1,$B$1:$B$3)
