What does the "--" mean? in a function

If a function is:

=SUMPRODUCT($G$23:$G$127,--($B$23:$B$127=$J35),--($C$23:$C$127=K$34))


I understand the array parts, and the above is asking for criteria in J35 and K34, but when you use the sumproduct it ask for only, array1, array2, array3..... How do I knew to use the "--"?
