What techniques to locate a cell / row / column were used before the MATCH and INDEX functions were released.

The Match and INDEX functions are incredible useful but how did people identify a cell / row / column before these functions were released?

I'm wanting to look up a value in a column and use the row to look up a value in that row.

Thanks

Excel Facts

How can you automate Excel?
Press Alt+F11 from Windows Excel to open the Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) editor.
i used vlookup() which was released in version 1 for mac back in 1985
I started using lotus 123 around 1987 and then in 1991 i was on excel and using it for performance information , loads of analysis, sales etc and business planning, budget control

I'm wanting to look up a value in a column and use the row to look up a value in that row.
not sure i follow

is this something that will work with index/match - but you dont want to use that ????

A SMALL sample spreadsheet, around 10-20 rows, would help a lot here, with all sensitive data removed, and expected results mocked up and manually entered, with a few notes of explanation.

This will possibly enable a quicker and more accurate solution for you.

MrExcel has a tool called “XL2BB” that lets you post samples of your data and will allow us to copy/paste your sample data into our Excel spreadsheets, saving a lot of time.

You can also test to see if it works ok, in the "Test Here" forum.

OR if you cannot get XL2BB to work, or have restrictions on your PC

then put the sample spreadsheet onto a share

I only tend to goto OneDrive, Dropbox or google docs , as I'm never certain of other random share sites and possible virus.
Please make sure you have a representative data sample and also that the data has been desensitised, remember this site is open to anyone with internet access to see - so any sensitive / personal data should be removed

Make sure you set any share or google to share to everyone

Thanks etaf.

It will work with INDEX / MATCH but Version 2013 does not have it.

All I am doing is looking up a value in column A and need the row number of the found cell so that I can look along that row for a value.

I'll post something using XL2BB later. I tried to use it a while ago and I could not get it to work.

I've managed to use MATCH and LOOKUP to achieve what I wanted.

How / where do I post the xl2BB copied range when submitting a post.

Thanks.
