x y scatter plot with reference line x=y

sorry for this trivial question that might be somewhere already coverd within this forum but searching through the past threads I could not find a suitable solution to my problem;
I have two series of data (x and y) that I need to scatter plot in a graph and this can be quite easily done via the simple arrangement of data in two distict columns;
but I also need to draw a "reference line" (i.e. a diagonal line with x=y) splitting the graph in two equal areas;
I've trying to:
- add a new series of data and format it as a line graph but then the x axis is taking the values of this new series instead of keeping the original x values;
- add a new series of data and format it as a dispersion graph but in this case the result is not a line as a want but a series of allineated point (which I can interpolate with a straight tendency line but then the marking points are still visible and I do not want that)

my ideal solution would be to have a straight 45° degrees line delimiting in two equal parts my scatter plot chart: how to do that?

any hints would be much appreciated

First plot columns A:B as an XY scatter chart. C3 and D3 have the formulas:

=MAX(A:A)
=MAX(B:B)

respectively.

Right click the chart and choose Source Data. On the Series tab, add a series, set the x and y values to C2:C3 and D2:D3 respectively and click OK. Right click the added series and choose Chart Type. Select the bottom right version and press OK.

for the line to be at 45 degees and x=y you need to be sure the scales for the x and y axis are equal.

do you want

• 45 degrees going through 0,0
• x= y
• both
• the graph actually split in half diagonally
• You can format the data set on an XY graph so that they do not show and just a line or just the trend line would show

it is what I need but let me please slightly modifiy your approach so that C3 and D3 have respectively the formulas: =MAX(A:B) and =MAX(A:B) because just in doing that it's possible to set a correct diagonal (45 degrees or angular coefficient equal to 1);

now I need to make a step forward because I would like to set the maximum values of x and y axis as in C3 and D3 cell and then dimension the chart so its gridlines make a square pattern;

but I'm not able to adapt it to my particular need of setting the min, max and also the major unit of both chart axes...
In that code of "peltiertech" I've been trying very roughly to modify Ymax = range("D3") Ymin = range("D2") but the result is and endless loop...

that's really useful in order to set the min,max,tick values of both axes (I used that code);

but my very much problem is to set min,max,tick values of both axes AND have the gridlines of the chart gridlines set to make a square pattern;

when I'm trying to "combine" the two code of "peltiertech":
the first one in

they seem to "conflict" because either you get the min,max, tick or the square gridlines correctly set (both options seems not possible? ...but that is certainly pertaining to my basic level of vba knowledge!);
what do you think: is it probably necessary to "work" on the dimensions of the "box" containing the chart (.parent)? ...and how to do that automatically (or in a iterative way)?
